A teenage boy named Jack steals Zedd, Richard and Kahlan's horses and sells them to Rimus, a magic peddler, in the village of Drendril. While tracking Jack in the village, Richard is aided by a bartender's magic potion that allows him to see Jack's precise location. Jack leads them to Rimus, who tells his associates to attack them. During the fight, Kahlan uses her Confessor power on Rimus and Zedd exposes himself as a wizard. They discover that Drendril is being corrupted by a wizard's magic potions. The wizard captures Zedd and is revealed to be Jeziah, a past student of Zedd. Richard uses more of the bartender's potion to find Zedd but is eventually forced to use his woods guide skills. After finding Zedd, Richard, Kahlan and Rimus engage Jeziah and the peddlers in a fight. While the peddlers are defeated and Jeziah captured, Rimus dies protecting Kahlan. Zedd reminds Kahlan of her secrets and warns her of the feelings that are developing between her and Richard.

A Massive Dynamic employee jumps out of a window when he believes he is being attacked by butterflies. Olivia's connection with John Scott leads her to breaks in the case, but she becomes fed up with his manifestations and decides to return to the sensory deprivation tank to rid herself of them. Meanwhile, Peter's past catches up with him when his enemies find out he's back in Boston.
